Have you ever heard of/used a TENS unit for pain relief during labor and delivery? Was it actually effective?

I was induced w/ my 1st daughter. I chose not have an epidural. We attended a birthing class where I learned breathing techniques to get me through the pain. Still, I'd be lying if I didn't say that it was very painful. (I have heard that being induced makes the pain of labor much more intense.)
I was undecided regarding the use of an epideral with my 2nd daughter. I went into natural labor at midnight. When we arrived at the hosptial, I was absolutely exhausted & just wanted to sleep. I was already 5 cm dilated & the pain was very bearable. Still, I opted for the epidural, slept 4 hours, had an easy/painless labor & delivery.
We are expecting baby 3 & I am undecided as to what I want to do. I recently heard about a device called a TENS unit. You can have one prescribed by your Dr. It uses electric pulses to treat/eliminate pain. Unlike an epidural, TENS units are side-effect free. (They shouldn't be used until labor.)
